hi all, really simple query,what deflection limit would you use when designing cantilevered timber poles supporting a timber deck. as the decks as sitting on posts / poles 2.4-3m high , they may be some apparent sensory vibration.
the cantilevered version of this deck still wants 2×8 joists 2x6s would not suffice ², but it creates a stronger structure. the maximum span for syp pt 2x8s 12 o/c is 14 2², so a girder at 14 0 is close to the maximum. conversely, a two foot cantilever puts the beam only 12 out, well short of the limit.
photo 3 shows the balcony with part of the plywood decking installed and some of the wood blocking installed between the ends of the wood trusses with the cantilever beams attached.
re: flashing cantilevered deck joists dave- double 2x12 fir floor joists jutting strht out. 1970s house. all the deck sins- rim joist nailed to the deck joists, and the railing nailed to the outside of the rim. using siding as flashing didn't work very well . horrible deck, a lot of cross bracing had been added to keep the sway down i guess.

re: waterproofing cantilevered deck joists joe -the only luck i've had in that situation is a rubber roof over plywood. the roofing guys ran the rubber in,and we set our sliding door in the adhesive they supplied. every other one i have done with spaced decking has wicked water in, especially if the door was at the same level.
